6 Ways to Boost Your Metabolism
How your body reacts to the foods you eat has very much to do with your metabolism. The higher your metabolic rate, the faster your body burns off the energy. There is no tangible way to measure your metabolic rate. What I mean here is that you can’t say “my body burns 120 calories per hour”. But we can control the amount of calories we take in everyday. Here is one fact: whatever excess calories that your body cannot utilise, they will be converted to and stored as fats.
Here are 6 ways to boost your metabolic rate. More weight loss tips here.
1. Do cardio exercises. The experts have said that enough, and let me repeat it again. When you perform a cardio exercise(s), the body will need a lot of energy. What are the best cardio exercises? Jogging, biking, aerobics, swimming or any other activities that will make you sweat and pant. Each cardio exercise should last at LEAST 30 minutes. Why? A jog of 30 minutes will use up ‘all’ the energy in your body, and continuing the cardio exercise will kick-start the fat-burning process. Stick to 3 times per week.
2. Don’t skip breakfast. If you think that by skipping breakfast and just eating 2 meals a day will help you lose weight, then you are wrong. Your body will react by slowing down your metabolism. Your body thinks that there is a ’shortage’ of energy and that there is a need to conserve any energy that comes in the later part of the day.
3. Eat smaller, regular portions. This will regulate your metabolic rate and keeps your body working throughout the day. Instead of cramming 2 meals into 1 (which most of us busy professionals do), try to eat 5-6 smaller meals a day. You should have a good breakfast to start the day and go easy on your dinner. Your metabolic rate slows down at night and your body cannot burn as much energy. Sad to say, most of us do it the other way round. We feast during dinner.
4. Eat more fibre. Include a diet of fruits, vegetables, nuts and beans into your daily consumption. Fibre takes a long time to digest and so it will give you the feeling of ‘fullness’. What does that mean? You eat less!
5. Drink more water. Water helps to drain away those toxins and keep your body in optimal performance. It is also an excellent thrist-quencher. What’s even better? Zero calories!
6. Include chillies in your diet. Chillies contain capsaicin that helps the body to burn energy for around 20 minutes after eating. Peppers are equally good.
